RALEIGH, N.C.- The NC State men's and women's cross country teams will open the championship season on Friday as they host the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship meet at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. The third-ranked women's team will compete in the 6,000m race, while the men's team will compete in the 8,000m race. This will mark the first time since 2009 NC State has hosted the Championships and the eighth time overall.
Season Rewind:
The team kicked off the season on its home course at the adidas XC Challenge. The women's team finished in first place for the third consecutive year, while the men finished second overall. From there, the Pack traveled to Notre Dame, where the women finished second of 23 teams, the men finished 11th of 25 teams, and both Sam Parson and Elly Henes were awarded weekly ACC honors for their breakout performances at the race. Parsons finished second overall in 23:34.9 and Henes finished 44th overall in 17:04.1. After a two-week hiatus, the team then picked back up at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, one of the most competitive races of the year. The women placed second after upsetting top-ranked Providence, and the men finished 24th. Once again, Parsons had a great individual race, leading the race at the 4,000m mark, and ultimately crossed the finish line in fifth place overall. On the women's side, Erika Kemp led the Wolfpack for the third meet in a row, finishing seventh in 20:15.9.
PACKing Up:
The teams will attempt to run together in order to have as many athletes as possible finish among the top of the field. The top five runners from each team will score points toward the team's overall finish.
Women's Lineup: Bianca Bishop, Ryen Frazier, Wesley Frazier, Elly Henes, Erika Kemp, Rachel Koon, Kaitlyn Kramer, Megan Moye, Alyssa Rudawsky, Beth Taye
Men's Lineup: Bakri Abushouk, Ben Barrett, Philip Hall, Sebastian Hanson, Zack Langston, Elijah Moskowitz, Aubrey Myjer, Sam Parsons, Patrick Sheehan, Aaron Thomas
2015 ACC Championships:
Last year, both the men's and women's teams finished second at the ACC Championships and had eight athletes qualify for All-ACC honors in total. On the men's side, the Wolfpack will return four of last year's scorers, led by Parsons, who finished the 8,000m race seventh overall with a time of 23:44.8. The women will return all five of their top scorers from last year's ACC meet, including top NC State finisher Ryen Frazier, who finished the 6,000m race in 20:22.4 for fifth place overall.
The Competition:
On the women's side, Notre Dame (No. 19) represents the only fellow ACC school currently among the USTCCCA's top 30. Individually, Anna Rohrer (Notre Dame) and Isabelle Kennedy (Boston College) have had impressive seasons and will look to finish among the top of the field. On the men's side, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 16 Virginia and No. 26 Virginia Tech will provide the Wolfpack men with strong competition. Individually, defending national champion Justyn Knight will be expected to push the pace of the men's race.
Wolfpack Tradition:
In total, the NC State cross country programs have won 37 ACC Championships and have 23 individual champions -- the most of any school in the conference for both respective stat categories.
