RIO DE JANEIRO-Â Simonas Bilis of the NC State men's swimming and diving program is slated to swim in the 50m freestyle finals Friday at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro after making a #STATEment in the water on Thursday.
The Panevezys, Lithuania, native stopped the clock at 22.01 in the prelims to finish in a tie for 14th, then proceeded to post a lifetime-best mark of 21.71 on Thursday evening in the semifinals to finish in a tie for sixth in the standings.
His performance in Rio stands as a Lithuanian record, as he now holds national records in the 50 and 100m freestyle.Â
The men's 50m free finals will be contested at 9:45 p.m. ET inside the Olympic Aquatics Stadium. Bilis is also slated to swim on Lithuania's 4x100m medley relay Friday.
Distance specialist Anton Ipsen is also slated to swim Friday, as he will compete in the 1500m freestyle prelims.
The swimming portion of the Olympic Games will run on television through Aug. 13 and be broadcast via NBC. On most days, NBC primetime programming will air from 8 p.m. to midnight ET/PT; daytime from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET/PT; late night from 12:35 a.m. to 1:35 a.m. ET/PT; and replays from 1:35 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. ET/PT.
