
Five NC State Baseball Players Selected in the 2025 MLB Draft

ATLANTA - Five NC State baseball players were selected in the 2025 MLB draft Monday afternoon. Dominic Fritton, Shane Van Dam, Justin DeCriscio, Josh Hogue and Andrew Shaffner each earned selections from Major League clubs.
Fritton was the highest overall pick for the Wolfpack when he was selected 117th overall in the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Rays. Van Dam earned a ninth round selection after being picked up by the Kansas City Royals with the 278th overall pick. Selected by a team in his home state, DeCriscio was picked up by the San Diego Padres with the 310th pick, the Miami Marlins made their selection of Hogue with the 438th overall pick and Shaffner went 444th overall to the Cincinnati Reds.
With this year's draft class, head coach Elliott Avent has now guided 136 players to MLB Draft selections during his 29-year tenure at NC State. The Wolfpack concludes the 2025 MLB Draft with 199 all-time selections.
Dominic Fritton | 4th Round | No. 117 Overall Pick | Tampa Bay Rays
A junior from Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, Fritton totaled 222.1 innings over three seasons with the Wolfpack. He finished with an 11-17 record, 254 strikeouts and a 5.26 ERA in 51 appearances and 43 starts.
In 2025, the left-handed pitcher served as the Wolfpack's primary Friday night starter, posting a 5-6 record over 86.2 innings. He led the team with 107 strikeouts, becoming the first pitcher since 2014 to reach the 100-strikeout mark in a single season. He struck out his 100th batter against Clemson in the ACC Tournament.
During his sophomore campaign, Fritton started 17 games for the Wolfpack, finishing the season with a 7.64 ERA, striking out 72 batters over 73 innings pitched.Â
In 2023, Fritton made nine starts and 17 total appearances, logging 75 strikeouts over 62.2 innings pitched. He finished his freshman season with a 3.59 ERA and notched his first career win against Belmont on Feb. 26, tossing six shutout frames.
Shane Van Dam | 9th Round | No. 278 Overall Pick | Kansas City Royals
Van Dam, a junior from Cranford, New Jersey, made 19 appearances in his two seasons with the Wolfpack, recording 42 strikeouts over 45.1 innings after transferring from SUNY Cortland.
In 2025, Van Dam made three appearances, including his first career start against UNCW on May 6. He tossed three scoreless innings against Stanford on May 17, and finished the season holding opposing batters to a .233 batting average.
During his first season with the Wolfpack in 2024, Van Dam made 16 pitching appearances out of the bullpen. He sported a 4-0 record with a 4.58 ERA over 37.1 innings pitched before suffering a season-ending injury. He limited opposing batters to a 2.16 batting average and earned his first collegiate victory with 3.2 innings of relief at Hawaii on Feb. 25.
Van Dam appeared in 15 games with three starts during his freshman season at SUNY Cortland. He finished with a 2-1 record, striking out 43 batters and only allowing 13 walks over 29.1 innings pitched. He finished with a 3.07 ERA and limited opposing batters to a .162 batting average.Â
Justin DeCriscio | 10th Round | No. 310 Pick | San Diego Padres
A senior shortstop from Orange County, California, DeCriscio played in 52 games in 2025, making 51 starts after transferring from San Diego. He finished the season with a .955 fielding percentage, recording 49 putouts, 101 assists, and just seven errors.
At the plate, DeCriscio hit .289 on the season with 55 hits, 12 doubles, two triples and eight home runs. He drove in 44 RBIs and 45 runs scored, posting a .500 slugging percentage.
Over three seasons at San Diego, DeCriscio appeared in 130 games with 118 starts.
Josh Hogue | 15th Round | No. 438 Pick | Miami Marlins
The junior from North Palm Beach, Florida, made 90 starts in 92 games over two seasons with the Pack after transferring from Santa Fe College. In 2025, Hogue posted a .327 batting average, with 71 hits, 18 doubles and a career-best 11 home runs. He drove in 43 RBIs and scored 44 runs while slugging .562. Defensively, he posted a .967 fielding percentage.
In his first year with the Pack, Hogue batted .314 with 26 runs scored, 44 hits, five doubles, one triple and four home runs. He also recorded 58 putouts, two assists, and three errors, finishing with a .952 fielding percentage.
While at Santa Fe College, Hogue led the team in hits, runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He also played in left field for all 50 games.
Andrew Shaffner | 15th Round | No. 444 | Cincinnati Reds
A junior from Elk Creek, Virginia, Shaffner made 40 appearances on the bump, including one start, posting a 4-1 record, 70 strikeouts, and a 3.75 ERA during his three seasons at NC State.
In 2025, the right-handed pitcher stepped into a key bullpen role, earning seven saves and making his first career start on Feb. 25 against Richmond. Throughout the season, he pitched 37.1 innings, striking out 39 batters while recording a 3.13 ERA and holding opponents to just a .237 batting average.
In 2024, Shaffner nailed the first save of his career with three scoreless and hitless innings at 19-ranked Georgia in the NCAA Super Regionals. He also showcased his athleticism by contributing as a defensive outfield replacement and pinch runner, earning his first career hit against Norfolk State.
As a freshman in 2023, Shaffner appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen, logging a 3.86 ERA and a 23-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 21.0 innings pitched.
