Wolfpack Scores Three in the Seventh in Comeback Win
RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State's baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete a late-inning comeback over Wagner Saturday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Faced with a 2-0 deficit entering the seventh-inning stretch, designated hitter Noah Soles jumpstarted the rally with a leadoff double. Michael Gupton then made his NC State (2-0) debut, entering the game as a pinch runner for Soles at second base. Following a flyout to center field, Carter Trice walked to put runners at the corners with just one out.
Trevor Candelaria put the Pack on the board with an RBI single to center field on a 3-2 pitch, trimming the deficit to 2-1. Payton Green then tied the game with an RBI single of his own to left field. Candelaria scored the winning run via an error when Wagner relief pitcher Nicholas Hanson fired a failed pickoff attempt past the first baseman, allowing Green to move up to second base and Candelaria to score from third base.
Baker Nelson and Justin Lawson earned the final six outs on the mound to seal the comeback victory. Nelson earned his first win of the season, while Lawson, who entered with two outs in the eighth inning, shut down the Seahawks with the final four outs.
Lawson stranded a Wagner (0-2) runner at third base to close the eighth inning before sitting down the Seahawks in order in the ninth, punctuating the win with a three-pitch strikeout.
Wolfpack starting pitcher Matt Willadsen turned in a quality start in his first outing of the season, pitching six innings while allowing just two runs on five hits. Willadsen struck out six opposing batters without relinquishing a walk. In nine innings pitched, the Wolfpack pitching staff struck out nine batters without issuing a walk.
Green again paced NC State at the plate with a multi-hit performance, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk.
The Wolfpack had early chances to get on the scoreboard, leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the third and bottom of the sixth before breaking through in the seventh inning. In total, the Pack left 11 runners on base in the comeback win.
Wagner's Chris Conniff led the Seahawks with three hits, while Maimu Kobayashi's solo home run in the third inning helped open the scoring in Saturday's matchup. An RBI double from Dante Faicchio stretched Wagner's advantage to 2-0 before the final out was recorded in the third frame.
