
NC State Finishes 6th of 18 At Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The NC State men's golf team shot a 12-over-par score of 300 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic at the Westin Rio Mar Country Club's par-72, 6,931-yard River Golf Course in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Tuesday, to place 6th out of 18 teams. The Wolfpack finished ahead of three top-11 teams, No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 6 Minnesota, No. 11 Texas and ahead of three more top-25 teams, No. 21 Illinois, No. 22 Duke and No. 25 Northwestern. NC State was even-par going into the final round.
Fernando Mechereffe led the team and finished tied for 11th overall with a one-under-par score of 215. The senior fired a third round 73 to go with his pair of 71s in the first two rounds. Stephen Lewton carded a 75 Tuesday to end up eight over and Wesley Horne and Jerry Richardson both shot 76 in the third round. Horne finished three over to tie for 24th place and Richardson was six over par. Garry Hill ended up 10 strokes over par with a third round 79.
A tournament that is recognized as one of the premier events of the collegiate season, the 18-team field featured eight of the top 25 teams in the Golfweek Top-25 Poll. Florida won the tournament with a nine-under-par total of 855. Matt Hendrix from Clemson was the medalist, winning with a nine-under-par score of 207.
