RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The NC State men's golf team finished 13th in their spring season opener, the Puerto Rico Classic. Taylor Crosby, a junior who transferred from Georgia at semester, led the Wolfpack with a five over par total at the Westin Rio Mar par 72, 6,945-yard River Golf Course. Crosby, who tied for 35th individually, led NC State in the first round with a two under score and also in the third round with a three over score.
Starting out two under after the first round, thanks to Crosby and Garry Hill turning in 70s along with Banks Wood carding a 71, the Wolfpack was in seventh place heading into day two. NC State slipped six spots to 13th in the second round when the Wolfpack shot 15 over. The Pack matched that score in the final round to conclude the event 28 over.
Stephen Lewton fired a steady three over each day, ending up nine over for the tournament and one stroke behind Hill. Following up a first round 70, Hill went five-over in the last two rounds.
Third-ranked Georgia Tech shot 19 under to finish ahead of the 18-team field, which included 11 top-30 squads. Alejandro Canizares of Arizona State was the individual medalist with a 12 under total. NC State returns to action next weekend when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Golden Eagle Golf Club.
