
Men's Golf in 6th at Puerto Rico Classic

Rio Grande, Puerto Rico - The 19th-ranked NC State men's golf team is in sixth place after round one of the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Golf Club.
NC State shot an 18-hole team score of even-par 288. Albin Choi, Mark McMillen and Mitchell Sutton all shot 1-under 71 and are tied for 15th to lead the Wolfpack
11 of the 14 teams in the field are ranked in the top 50 according to Golfstat. No. 6 Georgia Tech leads the field at 10-under 278, followed by No. 4 Alabama at 7-under 281 and No. 2 Oklahoma State at 5-under 283.
Choi, who came in ranked 52nd in the Golfstat Cup standings, had four birdies to highlight his round.
Sutton, ranked 76th by Golfstat, birdied three of his first seven holes to get to 3-under early in his round, but gave those back with three bogeys as the day progressed.
McMillen had a team-leading six birdies on Sunday.
Senior Brandon Detweiler, ranked 63rd nationally, is tied for 56th after posting a 3-over 75. He began his round on No. 8 and proceeded to double bogey. He regained positive momentum with three birdies on the day.
Junior Chad Day shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 67th. He also got off to a rocky start with a double bogey at his first hole of the day - No. 10 - and was 5-over 41 at the turn, but rallied with three birdies over his final nine holes of the day. The only blemish was another double at the par-3 seventh.
There is an eight-way tie at the top of the leaderboard at 3-under 69.
Round two begins Monday morning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
