#STATEment Finish: Wolfpack Rallies for Third at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – The NC State men's golf team finished the 2016 Schenkel Invitational with a #STATEment round Sunday, shooting 16 strokes under par to climb the final team standings from ninth place to third. The Wolfpack finished in a third-place tie with Kentucky and placed ahead of 10 other schools, including No. 4 Auburn and No. 19 UNC-Chapel Hill.
All five Wolfpack golfers shot under par Sunday and finished the tournament under par as well. David Cooke (T15th, -7) and Stanhope Johnson (20th, -6) led the way for the Wolfpack throughout the tournament. During Sunday's final round, Stephen Franken carded a career-best score of 66 (-6) while Cooke missed his career low by just one stroke with a 67 (-5).
No. 15 Vanderbilt won the tournament with a three-round score of 823 (-41). No. 10 Wake Forest finished second with a cumulative score of 833 (-31). In the tie for third place, NC State and Kentucky finished with matching scores of 839 (-25).
This weekend marks the fifth time during the 2015-16 season that NC State has finished within the top three of a tournament field.

THAT'S QUITE A ROUND
NC State's team score of 272 (-16) on Sunday proved to be the second best round this season. Only the team's first-round score of 269 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge (September 25-27) in Burlington, Iowa, was lower.
TWO EAGLES
Cooke and Johnson each recorded an eagle during Sunday's final round at the Forest Heights Country Club. Cooke recorded his eagle on the par-five 12th hole while Johnson achieved his on the par-five 18th hole.
AUTOMATIC ON PAR THREES
Cooke proved to be automatic on par threes throughout the tournament, tying for first place in the entire field with an average score of 2.75 strokes per hole. He finished -3 overall on par threes.
